Little would anyone have guessed that a small European manufacturing consortium established in 1972 with only one aircraft type to its name would emerge as the world’s leading builder of commercial jet aircraft. Airbus Industrie, composed of companies from the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Spain, and the Netherlands built only the A300 widebody twin-jet originally, but developed an entire family of successful jetliners starting with the narrow-body A320 series twinjets and moving up to the world’s largest jetliner, the 550-passenger A380 "Super Jumbo" double-decker. The A330 shown here in Air Canada markings is perhaps the most successful iteration of the original A300 series which competes today with Boeing's ultra-long-range 777ER.
