By 1941 the Curtiss Hawk (P-36) was considered obsolete, and the Army Air Corps was replacing it with the Hawk's faster offspring, the P-40 Warhawk . . . relegating the P-36 to training roles. Still, in the hands of a determined pilot like 2nd Lt. Harry W. Brown, the Hawk could be a dangerous adversary. Lt. Brown, who went on to become the first Ace of the newly formed all P-38 475th Fighter Group, is seen here pulling away from his second victory on that Day of Infamy. Harry W. Brown shot down two Japanese Kate bombers over Kaena Point on Oahu, becoming one of the first U.S. pilots to shoot down an enemy aircraft upon the United States entry into World War II.

Personally autographed by Lt. Harry W. Brown.
